I
I swore I'd never be like my old man
But anger burns hotter than you plan
Spent my whole life runnin' from that house
But, truth is, there's no fuckin' way out
Went to the bar late that night
I was just lookin' to pick a fight
Saw my girl kissin' up on another man
My blood turned to fire, and my vision went red
So I beat that some bitch till he wished he was dead
Now there's cuffs on my tremblin' hands
I guess I became the same damn man
Now I'm sittin' here, I'm doin' my time
But it was the whiskey that did the crime
Every drop brought out my father's rage
Like a monster escapin' from a cage
It wasn't long, til the sirens found me there
And I traded my freedom for despair
Yeah, here I am, I'm doin' my time
But the worst cell's in my own damn mind
The gate clanged shut, I didn't flinch or stall
I owe the world a debt, I'm ready to pay it all
I'll fight my old man's shadow every single day
'Cause the man inside of me has a better way
I'm usin' this silence to beg for inner peace
I'm doin' my time, beggin' for a spiritual release
Yeah, I'm sittin' here, I'm doin' my time
But it was the whiskey that did the crime
Every drop brought out my father's rage
Like a monster escapin' from a cage
It wasn't long til the sirens found me there
And I traded my freedom for despair
Yeah, here I am, I'm doin' my time
But the worst cell's in my own damn mind
This orange jumpsuit almost fits too well
A hand-me-down from my father's personal hell
I signed away the ledger on the life he made me choose
And picked up a bible instead of the booze
My father was a monster, but that man is dead and gone
I'm tradin' his memory for a brand new dawn
Still, I'm sittin' here, I'm doin' my time
And now I own every second of that crime
Every drop brought out my father's rage
Like a monster escapin' from a cage
I'm doin' my time for the man I used to be
I'm tradin' my freedom for my soul's liberty
Yeah, here I am, I'm doin' my time
But the worst cell's in my own damn mind
