I
Granddad has a bible
And bottle that sit side by side
Preached bout God on Sunday
Then raised hell Friday night
The old man learned early
That pains how you live
Guess that's all he knew
So that's all he could give
I still hear that belt crack
Smell that stale gin
Him saying
"Boy, you ain't worth nothin
You should just give in"
This ain't no family tree
But a curse we all share
Three generations lost
Ain't none of this fair
Whiskey lit the fire, and rage fanned the flame
And every damn time it just ends the same
Swore that I'd never turn into that man
But the bottle don't care nothin' 'bout your plan
I'm sittin' at this bar, starin' down that glass
Dreamin' of drownin' out the past
My hands are shakin'
I can already taste that burn
One more drink and I'll never return
This ain't no family tree
But a curse we all share
Three generations lost
Ain't none of this fair
Whiskey lit the fire, and rage fanned the flame
And every damn time it just ends the same
The old box died
And the room went still
Only noise was me fightin' my own will
I saw my face in the whiskey's sweet shine
Thought damn
I'd finally crossed that line
Sitting there, I just stared for a while
And I swear, man, I saw my dad's smile
This ain't a family tree
It's a curse we've carried too long
Three generations deep
And I just keep singing their song
Whiskey lit the fire, but I'm killin the flame
I'm done playing
The devil's losin' his own damn game
